Graeme Souness predicts where Liverpool, Man United will finish
The former Liverpool midfielder believes Manchester United are favourites to finish in the Premier League's top four
Graeme Souness has named Manchester United as favourites to finish in the Premier League’s top four ahead of Liverpool in the 2016-17 season.
The Reds were in pole position to secure a place in next season’s Champions League following back-to-back victories over Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion.
Liverpool started the weekend six points ahead Manchester United in the top-four race with superior goal difference having played two games more than the Red Devils.
Manchester United moved to within three points of Liverpool thanks to a 2-0 win against Burnley at Turf Moor after goals from Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney.
Jurgen Klopp’s side failed to restore their six-point lead after Christian Benteke scored either side of half-time to secure a surprise 2-1 win for Crystal Palace at Anfield.
Speaking to Sky Sports about Liverpool’s top-four prospects, former Reds captain Souness explained why he considers Manchester United favourites to secure a Champions League place.
“Liverpool were never on easy street but that’s put them under a lot more pressure. They can’t afford any more slip-ups.
“This was never going to be an easy game – there are lots of warriors in there and it’s typical of football that Benteke comes back to haunt them. They’ve lost momentum. They’re no longer favourites to finish in top four.
“I think Jose Mourinho will really fancy it. Regardless of what he’s saying, I think he thinks he’s got a group of players who are really digging in and can get that fourth place, as well as to the Europa League final.”
Manchester United will take on La Liga outfit Celta Vigo in the Europa League semi-finals next month.
