The Serbia international left Old Trafford as a Manchester United legend after a decorated eight-year stint at the 20-time English champions.
Vidic won five Premier League titles, the Champions League, the Fifa Club World Cup and three League Cups under Sir Alex Ferguson.
The 35-year-old moved to Serie A side Inter Milan from Manchester United following David Moyes’ appointment as Ferguson’s successor back in 2013.
However, Carragher has lifted the lid on how close Liverpool came to signing Vidic before the centre-half moved to Manchester United.
Writing in his Daily Mail column about Vidic’s impact on the Premier League, Carragher admitted that he would have relished the chance to play alongside the Serbian in the Liverpool side.
“I would have loved to play alongside him and I almost did. Rafa Benitez thought he had signed Vidic in December 2005 but Manchester United came in and gazumped Liverpool,” Carragher said.
“Vidic was one of the main reasons Sir Alex Ferguson wrestled the title back from Mourinho in 2007. I was tempted to move him higher up this list but I can’t forget some of the games he endured against Fernando Torres!”
Vidic and Manchester United beat Benitez’s Liverpool side to the Premier League title in 2008-09 season.
Liverpool are in third place in the Premier League table.
