Joel Matip has warned Jurgen Klopp’s players that Liverpool must improve their defending to secure a top-four finish.

The Reds managed to keep a rare clean sheet on Sunday afternoon after a close-fought 1-0 win against West Bromwich Albion.

Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino netted a first-half winner to secure three points and cement their place in the top four.

The 18-time English champions are in third place in the Premier League table and six points ahead of Manchester United.

While Matip wants Liverpool to improve their defence, the Cameroon centre-half admitted that the Merseyside outfit are capable of out-scoring opponents.

“We know that we have to improve our defence, but it’s also the style of play which makes it difficult in England,” Matip told BILD.

“It’s up and down all the time, and the tactical systems sometimes go to pieces. You are vulnerable, and you especially see that with teams like us who are strong going forward. But thank God we also score the most goals.”

Matip moved to Liverpool in a free transfer from Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04 in the summer transfer window.

Liverpool are two points ahead of fourth-placed Manchester City, although the Citizens have played one game less than their Merseyside rivals.

The 18-time English champions will host their former striker Christian Benteke and his Crystal Palace side in their next Premier League game at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.
