Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Philippe Coutinho lost three kilos in the lead up to Liverpool’s 2-1 win against Stoke City on Saturday afternoon.

The Brazil international was forced off early during Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth at Anfield on Wednesday night after the attacking midfielder cancelled out Benik Afobe’s opener.

Coutinho was a surprising omission from the Liverpool line-up at the Britannia Stadium as Klopp placed Roberto Firmino and Daniel Sturridge on the bench for the trip to Stoke.

Republic of Ireland international Jonathan Walters broke the deadlock in the first half which promoted Klopp to turn to Coutinho, Firmino and Sturridge after the break.

And his Brazilian duo turned the game on its head after Coutinho levelled from close range before Firmino netted an incredible long-range strike to seal three points for the Reds.

However, Klopp has revealed that Coutinho was battling with a serious weight issue in the lead up to the Premier League game.

“Phil [Coutinho] lost three kilos in the last three days which some people wish but for a professional footballer it’s not too cool,” Klopp told BBC Sport.
