Garth Crooks is confident that Liverpool will finish in the Premier League top four this season, with help from Simon Mignolet.

The Belgium international produced an impressive performance in Liverpool’s 2-1 win against Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Liverpool were trailing 1-0 at half-time after Republic of Ireland international Jonathan Walters continued his excellent record against the Merseyside club.

However, half-time substitutes Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino turned the game on its head after the Liverpool No10 levelled from close range before the former Hoffenheim man netted a sensational volley.

Liverpool goalkeeper Mignolet had to produce two world-class saves to deny Charlie Adam and Saido Berahino to secure three points for the visitors.

Jurgen Klopp’s men are in third place in the Premier League table and six points clear of Manchester United with six games to go in the Merseyside outfit’s season.

Writing in his BBC Sport column, former Spurs legend Crooks claimed that Mignolet’s performance helped Liverpool take a significant step towards a top-four finish.

“He’s taken a fair amount of stick during his time at Liverpool but the hug from Jurgen Klopp at the end of the match seems to suggest goalkeeper Simon Mignolet was not just in good form but had done something quite special,” Crooks said.

“It was the save from Saido Berahino that did it – costing Stoke a point while keeping Liverpool on course for a Champions League spot.”
