Jose Mourinho talked up Anthony Martial’s performance after Manchester United’s 2-0 win at Burnley blew the top-four race wide open.

Martial featured from the start against Sean Dyche’s side at Turf Moor and repaid his manager’s faith in him by scoring the opening goal in the 21st finish after a swift counter-attack.

Wayne Rooney, also restored to the starting line-up, netted a second before half-time as Mourinho’s men claimed a vital win in the race for Champions League qualification.

And Mourinho was delighted by Martial’s performance after he was named man of the match for his fine display.

“If the attitude is right, if the brain is right, if the desire is right, everybody knows the qualities he has, so I’m really pleased with what he did for us,” Mourinho told his post-match news conference.

The result left Manchester United fifth in the Premier League table but just a point behind fourth-placed Manchester City heading into the crunch clash against Pep Guardiola’s side at The Etihad on Thursday night.
