Jose Mourinho has told Anthony Martial that he has “great potential” at Old Trafford but warned the Manchester United striker that he still has plenty of work to do to impress him.

The French striker has struggled to hold down a regular spot in the Manchester United first team this season after joining the club from Monaco in a big-money deal back in the summer of 2015.

Martial has scored three goals and made four assists in 18 Premier League games so far this season but has only started 12 matches in the English top flight.

He did not feature when Manchester United beat Chelsea 2-0 at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Sunday.

And although Mourinho feels that Martial has plenty of promise, he wants to see more from the striker in the coming weeks and months.

Speaking at his pre-match news conference on Wednesday, Mourinho said: “Do I think Anthony is a player with great potential? Yes.

“Do I think he can play successfully for me? Yes. But he needs to give me things that I like very much.”
