Gary Neville believes that David De Gea should take over as Manchester United captain if Wayne Rooney leaves Old Trafford in the summer.

Rooney has been tipped to quit Manchester United in the summer transfer window following his lack of playing time under Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford this season.

Indeed, Rooney has only made 10 Premier League starts so far this season and is likely to consider his future at Old Trafford at the end of the current campaign.

De Gea’s future has also been a subject of speculation in recent months, with Real Madrid rumoured to be interested in bringing the goalkeeper to the Bernabeu this summer.

However, former Manchester United defender Neville believes that the Spanish shot-stopper should be Manchester United’s next skipper after Rooney.

Asked by one fan who he thinks should take over from Rooney as captain at Old Trafford, Neville replied on Twitter: “De Gea.”
