Gary Neville explained why David De Gea’s performance at Burnley proved that the Manchester United number one is a top goalkeeper.

The Spain international helped Jose Mourinho’s side to keep a clean sheet in their 2-0 win at Turf Moor thanks to an alert performance.

Manchester United made the breakthrough in the first half when Ander Herrera teed up Anthony Martial to finish off a counter-attacking move.

The Red Devils extended their lead six minutes before half-time through Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney, who was making a rare start.

Burnley had few chances to test De Gea but the Manchester United shot stopper maintained his composure throughout on the rare occasions the home side threatened.

Speaking to Sky Sports about De Gea’s performance at the end of what was a largely quietly afternoon for the Manchester United man, Neville said:

“I always think that is the sign of a good goalkeeper when there is no panic. They just pull their arms away. Quite often a goalkeeper sticks his hand out and concede a corner to heap pressure on his team.”

Manchester United signed De Gea in a £19m deal from Atletico Madrid back in 2011.
