Frank Lampard has praised Jose Mourinho for transforming the Manchester United defence.

The Red Devils appointed Mourinho as Louis van Gaal’s successor at the end of the 2015-16 season following a fifth-placed finish.

Manchester United have endured a mixed Premier League campaign under the former Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid head coach.

Mourinho’s side have scored 50 times in 33 games in the Premier League, which is 20 goals less than the division’s top goal-scorers Liverpool.

Manchester United have contended with an injury crisis at the back throughout most of the 2016-17 campaign following injuries to Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Chris Smalling.

Eric Bailly and Daley Blind managed to keep a clean sheet in Manchester United’s goalless draw with Manchester City in the derby on Thursday night.

Manchester United have the second-best defensive record in the Premier League this season after conceding 24 times in the English top flight.

Speaking to Sky Sports about Manchester United’s derby performance, former Chelsea defender Lampard said:

“Jose Mourinho has done that [sorted the Man United defence]. You can see that over the course of the season. They haven’t conceded as many goals.

“You can see they can do a job when they need to do a job. He has organised them there.”
