Luke Shaw has reassured Manchester United supporters that Jose Mourinho’s side will continue to fight for a top-four place in the 2016-17 season.

The Red Devils are in fifth place in the Premier League table under Louis van Gaal’s replacement as Manchester United looked to secure a eagerly-anticipated return to the Champions League after a one-season absence.

However, the 20-time English title winners are four points behind their bitter rivals Manchester City ahead of the derby at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday 27 April.

Manchester United have two routes into Europe’s premier club competition available after the Red Devils booked their place in the Europa League semi-finals on Thursday night.

Mourinho’s men will take on La Liga side Celta Vigo over two legs for a place in the final thanks to a 2-1 extra-time win against Belgian outfit Anderlecht at Old Trafford.

Speaking after their Europa League quarter-final win, Shaw sent a message to the Manchester United fans about their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

Shaw told Manchester United’s website: “Obviously, we want to fight for the top four as well and now we have the semis and everyone wants to be playing, so the sort of quality in the training is good with everyone showing what they can do to get in the first XI.”
