Michael Owen tells Man United to sign this player up now
Michael Owen wants to see Michael Carrick handed a new one-year contract to stay at Manchester United beyond the summer
Michael Owen has told Manchester United not to waste any more time in offering Michael Carrick a new contract.
The veteran midfielder has been a solid performer for Jose Mourinho’s men when called upon this season and has offered the Red Devils some vital experience in the heart of their midfield.
Mourinho was quick to tie Carrick down to a one-year contract extension at Old Trafford upon his arrival last summer but there is yet to be any official confirmation of a new deal for the midfielder.
And former Manchester United striker Owen wants to see the 35-year-old handed a new deal to keep him at Old Trafford for next season.
Speaking on BT Sport on Thursday night, Owen said: “Especially with what they’ve got at the moment in there, I think they’d be very wise to sign him up for another season at least.
“He passes forwards a lot of the time and as an attacking player you want those midfielders who whip the ball into the striker’s feet – and he can do it as well as the best of them.”
Carrick, who has made 16 Premier League appearances this season, will be hoping to feature for the Red Devils when they take on Burnley at Turf Moor on Sunday afternoon.
Manchester United head into the game in fifth place in the Premier League table as they chase a top-four finish.
