Neville reveals role in bringing defender to Man United
Former Manchester United defender Phil Neville reveals his role in bringing Luke Shaw to Old Trafford
Phil Neville has revealed that he was involved in recruiting Luke Shaw for Manchester United.
The England international has provided one of the big talking points in the Premier League this week after Jose Mourinho was critical of the promising full-back.
Shaw has struggled to secure a regular place under the new Manchester United manager, making just his ninth appearance of the 2016-17 season from the bench on Wednesday night.
The former Southampton defender helped Manchester United to rescue a point in a 1-1 draw with Everton after the substitute’s deflected strike was handled inside the area by Toffees skipper Ashley Williams.
Shaw moved to Manchester United in a £27m deal from Southampton in the 2014 summer transfer window after Louis van Gaal took over the reins from David Moyes.
Neville was part of the Scot’s coaching staff before his dismissal in April 2014, and the retired Manchester United defender shed light on the role that he played in Shaw’s transfer to Old Trafford.
“When Luke Shaw signed for Manchester United I was probably involved in the process of scouting him and recommending him as a player because I thought he would be a Manchester United left-back for the next 10 years,” Neville told BBC Sport.
“You would think he would be a sensational player, but he just hasn’t done it.”
