Nigel Winterburn has claimed that Manchester United will never be able to dominate English football like they did under Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Red Devils are currently getting used to life under new boss Jose Mourinho following the Portuguese coach’s appointment at Old Trafford last May.

Manchester United have struggled to find consistent form since Ferguson opted to call time on his decorated career at Old Trafford at the end of the 2012-13 season.

The Red Devils missed out on a top-four finish as they ended up fifth in the table and won the FA Cup under Louis van Gaal last season.

Mourinho has been tasked with steering Manchester United back to the top of English football following his appointment as Van Gaal’s successor last May.

However, Winterburn feels that it is unlikely Manchester United will be able to dominate the sport in England like they used to.

Speaking on Sky Sport News HQ on Thursday morning, Winterburn said: “They’ve won a trophy, they have a chance still of winning other trophies this season.

“I think most people will agree there is still a lot of rebuilding to do.

“People will say they are moving in the right direction again.

“Whether they will ever get back to the giant they were under Sir Alex Ferguson and dominating the Premier League, I don’t think that will ever happen again.

“They will come back and be very competitive and you would think that would happen very quickly.”
