Robert Pires: What Paul Pogba’s critics forget about Man United record signing
The former Arsenal midfielder defends Manchester United record signing Paul Pogba
Robert Pires believes Paul Pogba’s critics forget that the Manchester United midfielder is only 24 years old.
The France international moved to Manchester United in a world-record £89m deal from Serie A champions Juventus in last summer’s transfer window.
Pogba has scored four goals and has made three assists in his first season back in the Premier League after moving to Turin under Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2012.
The Manchester United midfielder has been criticised for his underwhelming performances in their big Premier League and EFL Cup fixtures.
However, Pogba has shown signs of progress throughout the campaign, which led to Gary Neville suggesting that Manchester United missed the midfielder’s passing in a 0-0 draw at Manchester City.
“To call Paul Pogba a flop and overrated is a lazy statement. I think he’s just getting started and will only get better,” Pires told bwin.
“People are still forgetting he’s a young player, he’s only 24, so United fans need to be patient with him.
“It’s not Pogba’s fault that Manchester United spent the money they did on him. He’s got so much potential to be the best player in the world in a few years.”
Manchester United are in fifth place in the Premier League table and a point behind Manchester City in the race to secure a place in next season’s Champions League.
Pogba was one of four summer signings at Old Trafford last summer following Jose Mourinho’s appointment as Louis van Gaal’s replacement.
