Phil Neville believes Sir Alex Ferguson would be handling the Luke Shaw situation in a similar manner to Jose Mourinho but admits the Manchester United manager wouldn’t have publicly criticised the England defender.

The Manchester United left-back’s future has been a source of constant speculation in recent weeks after Mourinho’s prickly update on the 21-year-old full-back.

Shaw has struggled to break into the Manchester United manager’s side this season amid concerns about the left-back’s fitness and mentality.

Indeed, the former Southampton defender has only started seven games in the Premier League, while the defender has made two appearances of the bench.

Mourinho has also been criticised for his handling of the situation, with some ex-professionals questioning the manager’s decision to make his concerns public.

Speaking to BBC Sport about Mourinho and Shaw, Neville suggested that Ferguson would have done something similar with the Manchester United left-back.

“Behind the scenes he [Ferguson] would have been giving him the full barrels and leaving him in no doubt that if you don’t meet those standards, go and play for somebody else,” Neville said.

“Jose’s probably tried this behind closed doors and this is the last throw of the dice. To speak poorly about one of his own players, he must be absolutely at his wits end.”
