Pat Nevin has urged Luke Shaw to take encouragement from Henrikh Mkhitaryan looks to salvage his Manchester United career.

The England international is fighting for his Manchester United future after manager Jose Mourinho was critical of the left-back earlier this week.

Shaw has only made seven starts in the Premier League this season, although the 21-year-old has made a further two appearances from the bench.

The Manchester United manager brought Shaw onto the pitch during the second half of their 1-1 stalemate with Everton mid-week.

Shaw played a part in Manchester United’s last-gasp equaliser after his deflected show was handled in the area and Zlatan Ibrahimovic dispatched the resulting penalty.

Speaking to Irish radio station Newstalk about Shaw and his current predicament at Old Trafford, former Chelsea and Everton winger Nevin offered the defender some hope.

“Mkhitaryan wasn’t doing it, he wasn’t working, he wasn’t fit enough. He wasn’t playing, he didn’t care how much he cost. He put the work in and starts playing well and now he’s back. It doesn’t always happen with Mourinho,” Nevin said.

Shaw moved to Manchester United in a £27m deal from Southampton back in the 2014 summer transfer window.

The Red Devils are in sixth place in the Premier League table.
