Warren Barton praised Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s leadership skills after the striker helped Manchester United ease to a 1-1 draw with Anderlecht in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final.

The former Sweden international was handed a starting spot despite Manchester United’s clash against Chelsea in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

Ibrahimovic played his part in Manchester United’s open goal as his fellow summer signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan broke the deadlock in the first half with a close-range finish after Marcus Rashford’s initial shot was saved.

The visitors conceded a late equaliser when Leander Dendoncker headed past Manchester United’s number two Sergio Romero in the 86th minute.

Former Newcastle United defender Barton praised Ibrahimovic for reminding his Manchester United team-mates that there is still work to be done despite making the breakthrough.

“I like this bit from Zlatan as well. He is talking to them, keeping them focused.” Barton told FS1.

Ibrahimovic has scored 17 times in 29 games in the Premier League this season.

The former AC Milan and Barcelona striker was named as one of the six nominees for the PFA player of the year award.
