Lee Sharpe has warned Jose Mourinho that Manchester United can ill-afford to lose David De Gea in the summer transfer window.

The Spain international was named the Manchester United player of the year in the past three seasons thanks to his match-winning performances at Old Trafford.

De Gea has been one of Manchester United’s most-consistent performers under David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

The shot stopper came close to a move to La Liga giants Real Madrid back in the 2015 summer transfer window before a deal fell through on Spain’s deadline day.

Los Blancos have been linked with a transfer bid to sign the Manchester United number one as Zinedine Zidane looks to sign a replacement for Keylor Navas.

Former Manchester United midfielder Sharpe reckons it would be a devastating blow to lose De Gea as Mourinho continues to build for the future.

“For me, out of everyone United could lose in the summer De Gea would be the biggest and hardest to replace,” said Sharpe, speaking exclusively to 888sport.

“He’s been absolutely fantastic since he’s been at the club and is one of the best goalkeepers in the world. His footwork, his hand-to-eye co-ordination, his shot-stopping: he is good in every department. That would be their biggest loss if he was to go.”
