Gary Neville believes Manchester United should keep Zlatan Ibrahimovic beyond the summer transfer window.

The 35-year-old has emphatically answered his critics after the striker was questioned about his ability to make the transition to the Premier League.

Former AC Milan and Barcelona striker Ibrahimovic moved to Manchester United from Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain in the 2016 summer transfer window.

Ibrahimovic has scored an impressive 17 times in 28 games in the Premier League for the 20-time English champions in the 2016-17 season.

The Manchester United striker is facing an uncertain future with his current contract set to expire at the end of the campaign and MLS side La Galaxy thought to be interested in the towering centre-forward.

Speaking to Monday Night Football about Ibrahimovic’s future at Old Trafford beyond the end of the current campaign, the club’s former defender Neville said:

“I’d like to see Zlatan stay in a different role to what he’s had this season where it’s him or nothing.

“I’d like to see him phased over another season whereby Martial, Rashford and maybe someone else comes in and you see a changing of the guard, but you still the experience that is required is there.

“That’s why I’m disappointed with John Terry leaving Chelsea because I still think there’s a place for those experienced players in dressing rooms to set the tone for the rest. It’s not a case of either or for me.”

Ibrahimovic was controversially omitted from the Manchester United line-up for Sunday’s 2-0 win against leaders Chelsea.

Manchester United are in fifth place in the Premier League table.
