Jamie Carragher has warned Michael Keane against a return to Manchester United in the summer transfer window.

The newly-capped England international moved to Burnley from Manchester United in 2014 when Louis van Gaal was in charge at Old Trafford.

Keane helped Burnley to win the Championship in the 2015-16 season which secured their promotion to the Premier League.

And the 24-year-old centre-half has played an important role in helping Burnley to all but secure their status in the English top flight for another season.

Keane’s composed performances in Sean Dyche’s side has led to speculation that Manchester United could look to re-sign the centre-half in the summer.

The England defender has also been linked with a move to Chelsea, Everton and Liverpool in the 2017 summer transfer window.

Speaking to Sky Sports about Keane’s future, former Liverpool defender Carragher offered the centre-half some advice about a potential return to Old Trafford.

“It’s very difficult to play for a top club at that age because you’re learning the game and still making mistakes.

“I think Burnley has been great for him but it feels like the move is going to happen in the summer. There’s talk about Manchester United; I think it would be a big mistake for Keane to go back.

“I just think he would still be seen as the lad who came through at Old Trafford, whereas, if he goes somewhere for £15m to £20m, he’s the big signing. Phil Jones, Chris Smalling would know him as the kid from the youth team.

“He should go somewhere as the man, the centre-back, who’s going to play every week. Would he do that for United? I’m not sure.”

Carragher added: “There’s talk of Everton going for him. I think that’d be perfect. Yes, you want to win trophies but the main thing is to play week in, week out.”
