Pundit: Jose Mourinho will sell these four Man United players in the summer
Danny Higginbotham is backing Manchester United to sell four players in the summer transfer window
Jose Mourinho could oversee the exit of at least four Manchester United players in the summer, according Danny Higginbotham.
The Red Devils appointed the controversial Portuguese coach as Louis van Gaal’s replacement at the end of the 2015-16 season after a disappointing fifth-place finish.
Mourinho signed four players in the summer transfer window as the new Manchester United manager looked to overhaul his underperforming squad.
Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba moved to Manchester United in big-money deals which took the club’s spending to more than £150m.
The Manchester United boss is expected to oversee further changes at Old Trafford at the end of his first season in charge of the 20-time English champions.
Former Stoke City defender Higginbotham, who started his career at Manchester United, believes Mourinho will get rid of at least four players in the summer, with David De Gea, Matteo Darmian, Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney’s futures all in doubt.
“There’s a lot of talk about De Gea, there’s talk about Real Madrid again,” Higginbotham told Sky Sports News HQ.
“Obviously Darmian is playing at left-back, Carrick I really hope he’s given an extension to his contract.
“For me he’s still a massive part of Manchester United and can do what none of the other players can do.
“It will be Wayne Rooney’s decision, Wayne Rooney is very much the type of player who doesn’t want to sit on the bench. He won’t just sit there and take the money so it will be his decision to make. I would imagine if Wayne Rooney wants to leave, I don’t think Manchester United will stand in his way. He will still believe he has a good few years left in him at the highest level.
“It will be interesting to see what happens with that one.”
Manchester United are in the Europa League semi-finals but the Red Devils must get past La Liga side Celta Vigo to secure a place in the final in Gothenburg.
