Michael Owen issues warning to Jose Mourinho about Man United signings
The former Liverpool striker has warned Manchester United that it will be tough to make top-class striker signings in the summer
Michael Owen has warned Jose Mourinho that Manchester United will find it tough to unearth a top class Premier League striker in the summer.
The Red Devils drew 1-1 with Belgian side Anderlecht in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final on Thursday evening ahead of the return leg at Old Trafford next week.
Summer signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan gave Manchester United a first-half lead before Leander Dendoncker equalised for the Belgium club with four minutes remaining.
Manchester United have now drawn five games in their last eight games in all competitions ahead of the visit of Premier League leaders Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils signed four players in the summer transfer window last year, including former AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Former Liverpool and Manchester United forward Owen believes Mourinho will find it difficult to sign a proven goal-scorer suited to the Premier League in the summer transfer window.
“It’s quite hard to get a real top-flight centre-forward. They’ve got one in Wayne Rooney at the moment – he’s a top-class player and has been for years,” Owen told BT Sport.
“If Ibrahimovic is fit, he’s playing, and look what’s happened to Rooney. It’s very awkward to get a quality back-up striker. All of the best ones want to play all the time.”
Manchester United are in fifth place in the Premier League table.
