Juan Mata has warned his Manchester United team-mates that Jose Mourinho’s side need to improve their Old Trafford form to secure a place in the top four.

The Red Devils finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last season, which prompted Manchester United to sack Louis van Gaal and appoint Mourinho.

The new Manchester United boss has already won the Community Shield and the EFL Cup in the 2016-17 campaign, but the Red Devils have struggled with their league form, especially at Old Trafford.

Indeed, Mourinho’s men have drawn nine times in front of their home supporters, which has undermined their top-four bid.

Liverpool are six points clear of Manchester United in third spot but have played two games more, while fourth-placed Manchester City are four points clear of their derby rivals.

Speaking in his personal blog One Hour Behind about Manchester United’s top-four challenge, Mata revealed what needs to improve if Mourinho’s side are going to get the job done.

“[We are still] in the battle for the Champions League spots. We will fight until the end to be in the top four, and in order to do so we need mainly to get better at Old Trafford, at home,” Mata said.

“We have an opportunity the next weekend against the leaders Chelsea. It’s one of those games that everybody wants to play.”
