Lee Dixon reacts to Diego Costa’s display in Chelsea’s 4-2 win over Southampton
The former Arsenal defender praises Diego Costa after the Chelsea striker scored twice in a 4-2 win against Southampton
Lee Dixon hailed Diego Costa’s determined performance in Chelsea’s 4-2 win against Southampton on Tuesday night.
The Blues made the breakthrough in the fifth minute thanks to Eden Hazard’s 15th goal of the 2016-17 season after good work from Costa on the wing.
Southampton offered Chelsea’s title rivals Tottenham Hotspur some hope after Oriol Romeu scored against his former employers from close range.
The Premier League leaders restored their slender lead after England defender Gary Cahill managed to get on the end of Fabregas’ corner.
The Spain international was responsible for creating Chelsea’s third goal too, after Fabregas picked out Costa and the striker headed past England shot stopper Fraser Forster at Stamford Bridge.
Speaking about Costa’s 50th Premier League goal for Chelsea on Tuesday night, former Arsenal defender Dixon highlighted Fabregas’ role in the goal.
“It was a brilliant ball from Fabregas. He just picks out Diego Costa,” Dixon told NBC.
“Fabregas had time and space to put a ball in and invite Diego Costa to head it. Diego Costa will take that all day long.”
Dixon added: “It was the pure strength of Costa to get ahead of Bertrand. It’s a good header.”
Costa sealed a 4-2 win in the 88th minute with his 19th goal of the 2016-17 season before Ryan Bertrand’s late consolation goal.
And Dixon praised the Chelsea striker for his determined performance.
“This is Diego Costa at his best. He drives into the space and gets his short away early. It’s brilliant from the centre-forward. Nothing was going to stop him,” Dixon added.
Chelsea moved seven points clear of Tottenham Hotspur in the title race with five games to go in their 2016-17 season.
