Graeme Souness has admitted that Liverpool are no longer the favourites to finish in the top four this season.

The Reds suffered a potentially damaging blow to their hopes of Champions League qualification when they were beaten 2-1 by Crystal Palace at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

That result means that Manchester United can move above their bitter local rivals if they win their games in hand over Jurgen Klopp’s men before the season is out.

Liverpool are aiming to break back into the top four this season after the disappointment of their eighth-placed finish under Klopp last term.

However, Reds legend Souness has warned that the Merseysiders now face a significant uphill battle if they want to reestablish themselves as the favourites to finish in the top four.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Souness said: “They’ve lost their momentum now. They had two great away games and they get the points but now losing that one [against Palace], they’re no longer favourites to finish in the top four.”
