John Aldridge has warned Liverpool’s owners that the Reds will have so spend big in the summer transfer window if they want to challenge for the title next season.

Jurgen Klopp’s men suffered a disappointing 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace at Anfield on Sunday afternoon as the Reds suffered a serious blow to their hopes of finishing in the top four this season.

Klopp has been tasked with steering Liverpool back into the Champions League for next season but the Reds’ qualification is far from secure as the season reaches its climax.

Liverpool have been criticised for their lack of consistency in the Premier League this season and Reds legend Aldridge feels that the Merseyside outfit will have to splash the cash on significantly strengthening their squad this summer.

Aldridge wrote in his column for The Liverpool Echo: “If the weekend showed us anything, it’s that we don’t have enough players. And the owners simply have to realise that.

“You want to have young lads coming through the ranks, you want them to learn and gain experience from being in and around the first team.

“But you don’t want to leave yourself relying on them at this stage of the season with so much at stake.

“Other teams have had injuries this season, but they’ve had much stronger benches when the going has got tough.

“We’ve been unfortunate in that a lot of our injuries have been to key players.”
