Mark Lawrenson is expecting to see Liverpool and Arsenal emerge as serious contenders for a top-four finish this season.

The Gunners have faced plenty of criticism in recent weeks following their poor form in the Premier League but Arsene Wenger’s men successfully booked their place in the FA Cup final with victory over Manchester City last weekend.

Liverpool are still in the top four despite the disappointment of their 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace last weekend as Jurgen Klopp looks to steer the Reds to Champions League qualification in his first full season in charge.

Arsenal are set to take on bitter local rivals Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, while Liverpool are preparing for their trip to Watford on Monday night.

And Lawrenson feels that there are plenty more twists and turns to come as the race for Champions League qualification hots up.

Writing in his column for BBC Sport, Lawrenson said: “Thursday [the Manchester derby] is not make or break for a Champions League place for either side, because both of them will still have five more games remaining.

“There are also two other teams in the race – Liverpool, and a rejuvenated Arsenal.

“On the back of reaching the FA Cup final, I think the Gunners are going to get back a lot of the momentum and confidence they have been missing for several weeks.”
