Graeme Souness has claimed that Jose Mourinho will be confident of victory for his Manchester United side heading into their crunch clash with Manchester City on Thursday night.

The Red Devils head into the game looking to continue their recent good form in the Premier League after back to back wins over Chelsea and Burnley.

Manchester United know that victory over Pep Guardiola’s men at The Etihad on Thursday night would lift them up above their bitter local rivals and into fourth place in the table.

Mourinho is also gearing his Manchester United side up for their Europa League semi-final clash against Celta Vigo as he looks to steer his side to another trophy this season.

Liverpool were beaten 2-1 by Crystal Palace at the weekend to give Manchester United and their rivals fresh hope of catching the Reds in the race for Champions League qualification.

And Souness feels that Mourinho will now be very confident heading into Thursday’s game.

He told Sky Sports: “You don’t turn up for a derby game and think you’re going to give less than a 100 per cent. You take care of every 90 minutes. Mourinho will fancy [the derby] even more after this result.”
