Jamie Carragher admitted he was thrilled to see Wayne Rooney score in Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Burnley in the Premier League on Sunday.

The veteran striker was restored to the starting line-up by Jose Mourinho and repaid his manager’s faith by scoring the Red Devils’ second goal at Turf Moor.

Anthony Martial had given Manchester United the lead when he finished off a sweeping counter-attack in the first half, before Rooney added a second before half-time.

Rooney’s future at Manchester United has been a source of speculation in recent months due to his lack of playing time this season, and Sunday marked only his 10th Premier League start of the current campaign.

However, Liverpool legend Carragher insists that he was happy to see Rooney get on the scoresheet for Mourinho’s men at Turf Moor on Sunday.

Discussing Rooney’s goal during Sky Sports‘ coverage of the game, Carragher said: “It was a nice pass from Paul Pogba and he showed his strength.

“Anthony Martial was devastating in the first half. I said before the game that it would be great for Rooney to go out on a high. He’s had a great career for the club.

“I’m pleased he scored. If anyone is going to score, you wanted Wayne Rooney to score.”
