Gary Neville reacts to Ander Herrera’s display in Man United’s 2-0 win over Chelsea
Gary Neville heaps praise on Ander Herrera for the crucial part he played in Man United's 2-0 win over Chelsea
Gary Neville heaped praise on Ander Herrera after his defence-splitting pass allowed Marcus Rashford to give Manchester United the lead in their 2-0 win over Chelsea at Old Trafford.
Manchester United were by far the brighter team in the first half and their fast start seemed to leave Chelsea flat-footed at Old Trafford.
Herrera slid a brilliant ball into Rashford in the seventh minute and the 19-year-old striker confidently dispatched his finish past Asmir Begovic, who started in goal for Chelsea in the absence of the injured Thibaut Courtois.
Former Manchester United defender Neville heaped praise on Rashford for his composed finish but also pointed to Herrera’s crucial contribution to the opener.
And it was the Spaniard who made it 2-0 shortly after half-time when his deflected shot wrong-footed Begovic in the 49th minute.
Speaking during Sky Sports‘ coverage of the game, Neville said: “It was a wonderful, wonderful pass (from Ander Herrera).
“Marcus Rashford was on the last man, David Luiz, and he got away from him. He had a chance at Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup and didn’t take it but this time he did.”
Picking Herrera as his man of the match, Neville added: “It could have been any one of the Manchester United players but he was the engine, the goal-scorer and the assister. He was the man of the match.”
Manchester United now turn their attentions back to Europa League affairs and the return leg of their quarter-final clash against Anderlecht at Old Trafford on Thursday night after the 1-1 draw in the first leg last week.
Chelsea, meanwhile, take on Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup semi-finals next weekend as they look to bounce back from the disappointment of defeat.
