Paul Merson: Man United will sign brilliant striker if this happens
Paul Merson feels that Manchester United are likely to make a move to sign Harry Kane this summer if Zlatan Ibrahimovic leaves
Paul Merson believes Manchester United will swoop for Harry Kane in the summer transfer window – if Zlatan Ibrahimovic leaves the club.
It remains to be seen whether Ibrahimovic will extend his stay at Old Trafford beyond the summer after the veteran forward initially signed a one-year contract at the club last summer.
Ibrahimovic has been Manchester United’s top-performing player this season and has scored 28 goals in all competitions for Jose Mourinho’s men.
However, with the Swede yet to commit himself to Manchester United, former Arsenal star Merson feels that the Red Devils could be lining up a big-money move to sign Kane this summer should Ibrahimovic quit Old Trafford.
Merson wrote in his Daily Star column: “To do what he [Ibrahimovic] has in this league at 35 is amazing. He’s carried Manchester United this season.
“But he won’t be sticking around if he doesn’t think they can win the title. He won’t want to end his career as a nearly man.
“If he goes, I think Harry Kane will probably go to Manchester United as his replacement. I don’t see how Tottenham could turn the money down because they’ve got to pay for their new stadium.”
Ibrahimovic will be expecting to feature for Manchester United when the Red Devils take on Chelsea in the Premier League in their crunch clash at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Mourinho’s men are currently fifth in the table as they chase Champions League qualification.
