Jose Mourinho sends Europa League message to Man United fans
Jose Mourinho admits that winning the Europa League represents their best chance of qualifying for next season's Champions League
Jose Mourinho has warned Manchester United that winning the Europa League represents their last chance of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
The Red Devils sealed a 3-0 win over Sunderland on Sunday to keep their faint hopes of finishing in the top four alive, but Mourinho’s men are still outside of the Champions League qualification spots.
Manchester United will take on Anderlecht in the first leg of their quarter-final clash in the Europa League on Thursday night, knowing that winning the competition would offer them a direct route into next season’s Champions League.
And Mourinho concedes that their best hope of Champions League qualification for next season would be winning the Europa League this term.
Speaking at his post-match news conference on Sunday, Mourinho said: “It is the only chance we have to win one more trophy.
“It is as difficult as finishing fourth, but it is the only competition that we can win now, so we have to fight for that.
“I don’t want our club to be just happy fighting for top four and Champions League. I want us fighting for trophies.
“We don’t hide that we are still fighting for our situation in the Premier League but the Europa League becomes a fundamental competition for us. The Premier League was not possible because we drew too many matches.”
Manchester United will take on Chelsea in their next Premier League game at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon as they look to knock the Blues’ title bid off track.
