Gary Neville believes that Manchester United’s best hope of qualifying for next season’s Champions League will be to win the Europa League this season.

The Red Devils suffered a blow to their top-four hopes on Saturday when they were held to a frustrating goalless draw by West Brom at Old Trafford.

That result left Jose Mourinho’s men still facing an uphill task in trying to break back into the top four before the season is out.

Manchester United could yet book their place in next season’s Champions League by winning the Europa League this term.

And former Red Devils defender Neville feels that would be the best way to guarantee their spot in Europe’s elite club competition for next season.

Speaking on Sky Sports News HQ on Monday morning, Neville said: “At this moment in time, they make it so difficult for themselves to get into that top four.

“The Europa League is definitely the best route for them in terms of winning that.

“If you look at the fixtures United have got, they still have to play Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester City. That is so tough. They are going to drop points in those games, in any season at any time.

“At this moment in time, too many mistakes have been made and Jose Mourinho will know that.”
