Sergio Romero has spoken of his desire to prove his value to Jose Mourinho ahead of Manchester United’s clash against Anderlecht on Thursday night.

The Argentina international has been Manchester United’s second-choice goalkeeper since arriving at Old Trafford under Mourinho’s predecessor Louis van Gaal.

Romero has been limited to making appearances in the cup competition as David De Gea continues to occupy the number one shirt at the 20-time English champions.

The South American was unable to prevent Anderlecht scoring a late equaliser to rescue a 1-1 draw with Manchester United in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final.

Romero has only made 23 appearances in two seasons at Old Trafford but the shot stopper has won the EFL Cup and the FA Cup.

Speaking at his pre-match media conference ahead of Manchester United’s home clash against Anderlecht on Thursday night, Romero said:

“I think that when you get a chance to come to a club like United, even knowing there’s a chance you might be second choice, it’s a chance you want to take.

“I want to show the manager that I’m ready, if called upon, to go out there and not let the team down.

“You always want to be number one, but coming here was a great challenge to accept.”
