Mark Lawrenson states his prediction for Man United v Everton
Mark Lawrenson looks ahead to Manchester United's clash with Everton at Old Trafford on Tuesday night
Mark Lawrenson is backing Manchester United to return to winning ways in the Premier League by beating Everton 2-0 at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.
The Red Devils head into the game on the back of their frustrating goalless draw with West Brom at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.
Jose Mourinho’s men have fallen somewhat off the pace in the race for Champions League qualification, with the Red Devils fifth in the table and five points behind fourth-placed Manchester City.
However, former Liverpool man Lawrenson does not see Manchester United having any problems against the Toffees at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.
Writing in his column for BBC Sport, Lawrenson said: “Manchester United did not have enough about them to break West Brom down at the weekend but I think they will beat Everton.
“Zlatan Ibrahimovic is back from suspension and Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera could be fit, so the big boys may be back for United. If they are, they will make a difference.
“As for Everton, well they were really poor defensively in the Merseyside derby on Saturday – it is a long time since I’ve seen Liverpool’s front three given so much space to play.
“I am not really sure what Ronald Koeman’s game plan was at Anfield – they never got close to a defensive shut-out, and they did not pose much of an attacking threat either.
“That is why Everton were cut open so easily and, if they play like that again on Tuesday, it will happen at Old Trafford too.”
Manchester United could secure a route into next season’s Champions League by winning the Europa League this season.
The Red Devils are set to take on Belgian side Anderlecht in the quarter-finals of Europe’s second tier club competition later this month.
