Martin Keown admits he is surprised that Diego Costa wasn’t nominated alongside his Chelsea team-mates Eden Hazard and N’Golo Kante for the PFA player of the year award.

The Blues pair are the clear favourites to win the end-of-season award given Chelsea’s Premier League title charge.

Hazard has scored 14 goals and has made five assists in 29 appearances in the Premier League this season, matching his tally for the 2014-15 season when he won the prize for the first time.

Kante, meanwhile, has bolstered Antonio Conte’s midfield and transformed Chelsea into title contenders after the France star won the Premier League with Leicester City last season.

Spain international Costa has also proven a key figure and is the west London side’s leading goal-scorer thanks to a return of 17 goals in 29 games.

However, the former Atletico Madrid man was omitted from the six-man list of candidates for the PFA player of the year award.

Writing in his Daily Mail column, former Arsenal defender Keown spoke of his surprise that Costa didn’t feature on the list.

“It is a bit odd that Diego Costa is not there. He is the most difficult centre forward to play against in the Premier League,” Keown said.
