Antonio Conte deserves to win the manager of the year award if Chelsea land the Premier League title this season, according to Paul Merson.

The Italian coach took over the reins of the west London side at the end of the 2015-16 season after interim manager Guus Hiddink could only lead Chelsea to a tenth-placed finish.

The Blues squad were heavily criticised for their awful defence of their Premier League crown and Antonio Conte signed five new players to bolster his squad ahead of the new season.

Chelsea won their opening three Premier League games before back-to-back losses to Liverpool and Arsenal heaped pressure on the former Juventus manager.

Conte opted to switch to a 3-4-3 formation in the wake of those defeats and Chelsea have now only lost two games in 24 outings in the Premier League.

Indeed, Chelsea’s incredible run has left Conte’s men seven points clear of their closest rivals Tottenham Hotspur at the top of the table with seven games to go.

Speaking to the Daily Star, Merson explained why Conte deserves to win the Premier League crown.

“Chelsea’s run-in does not look that hard and they’ve just won their toughest game by beating City, so they are still clear favourites.

“I said from day one I fancied them to be champions. If they do it, manager of the year should only be going to one man – and that’s Conte.”
