Ray Wilkins: Jesse Lingard isn’t up to Man United standard, he’s too flashy
The former Manchester United midfielder isn't impressed with Jesse Lingard - on or off the pitch
Ray Wilkins has questioned whether Jesse Lingard is good enough for Manchester United after the midfielder signed a new long-term deal on Thursday afternoon.
The Red Devils midfielder has put pen to paper on a new four-year contract despite struggling to tie down a regular starting spot in Jose Mourinho’s first-team.
ESPN are reporting that Lingard will earn £80,000 a week thanks to his new deal, while appearance and performance bonuses could push his earns up to £100,000 a week.
The Manchester United star broke into the first-team under Mourinho’s predecessor Louis van Gaal and scored an extra-time winner to secure the FA Cup at Wembley last May.
Lingard found the net in Manchester United’s triumphs in the Community Shield and the FA Cup at Wembley earlier this season to highlight his eye for a goal on the big occasion.
However, former Manchester United midfielder Wilkins has questioned Lingard’s behaviour off the pitch as well as suggesting that the England star isn’t good enough for the 20-time English champions.
“Jesse Lingard isn’t really there at the moment as a Manchester United player,” Wilkins told the Alan Brazil Up Front podcast.
“I struggle to see it at the moment. When you’re flashing around in newspapers with big cars, it’s not envy but if things aren’t going well, keep a little bit under the radar.”
