Rio Ferdinand believes Jose Mourinho will have to choose between investing heavily in new Manchester United signings or giving youth a chance next season.

The Red Devils manager started with England teenager Marcus Rashford on the wing on Tuesday night as the youth graduate provided centre-forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic support up front.

The 19-year-old struggled to trouble the Everton defence in the Premier League clash, while Ibrahimovic was guilty of wasting a flurry of chances in front of their home fans.

The former AC Milan and Barcelona striker managed to salvage a point right at the death as Ibrahimovic cancelled out Phil Jagielka’s first-half opener in the third minute of added time.

Manchester United signed Ibrahimovic, Eric Bailly, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba in a big-money deal last summer following Mourinho’s appointment as their manager in May 2016.

Former defender Ferdinand admits Mourinho needs to decide whether he is going to continue with Rashford, Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard or spend heavily on new playing staff at the end of the season.

“Jose Mourinho will be sitting there and thinking it can’t go on like this. Either he goes out and buys someone or puts his faith in the young guys next season and Ibrahimovic. There are little details which could really change the details of this team,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.
