Paul Merson states surprise prediction for Sunderland v Man United
The former Arsenal midfielder believes a weakened Manchester United side could come unstuck against Sunderland on Sunday
Paul Merson is backing Manchester United to drop points against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils have drawn three of their last four Premier League games following stalemates with Bournemouth, West Bromwich Albion and Everton in their last three fixtures at Old Trafford.
Manchester United are in sixth place in the Premier League table after Arsenal managed to hoist themselves above Jose Mourinho’s side thanks to a 3-0 win against West Ham United.
Manchester United have the chance to secure a morale-boosting victory at the Premier League’s basement club Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Sunday afternoon before the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final against Anderlecht next week.
Arsenal legend Merson believes that Mourinho could field a weakened side against Sunderland to give his key players a rest ahead of their trip to Constant Vanden Stock Stadium in Belgium on Thursday.
“Manchester United have got Europa League in midweek and for me they’ve got to put all their eggs in that basket,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“They’ve had two bad results in a row and I don’t think they can make the top four anymore. This is almost a game they don’t need.
“Sunderland did alright at Leicester in midweek but they lost again. They’re down for me, but I think they’ll get a draw here.”
Manchester United are unbeaten in the Premier League since a 4-0 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge back in October.
