Mark Lawrenson is backing Arsenal to put the brakes on Tottenham’s title challenge by holding Spurs to a 1-1 draw in Sunday’s north London derby.

Tottenham are preparing to welcome their bitter local rivals to White Hart Lane on Sunday afternoon as they look to keep up with Chelsea at the top of the table.

Spurs head into this weekend’s round of games four points behind Chelsea but know that the gap could be seven points when they kick-off against Arsenal, as the Blues take on Everton earlier in the day on Sunday.

And former Liverpool star Lawrenson reckons that Arsenal are on course to claim a point from Sunday’s north London derby clash at White Hart Lane.

Writing in his column for BBC Sport, Lawrenson said: “Tottenham found a way to beat Crystal Palace on Wednesday night despite not playing particularly well, and that was a great result for them.

“Spurs have now won eight league games on the spin but I just have a feeling that Arsenal will put a spanner in the works of their bid to catch Chelsea.

“The Gunners’ winning run in all competitions is much shorter, at three matches, but it included Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final.

“Arsene Wenger’s side will be full of confidence and have got a bit of momentum too. This is a game that I don’t see them losing.”

If Tottenham beat Arsenal on Sunday, they will finish above the Gunners in the league for the first time in 22 years.

Arsenal finished second and Tottenham finished third in the table last season.
