Manchester United
Sergio Romero Described as the best number two goalkeeper in Europe before the game by Owen Hargreaves. Good save when first called into action in the 14 minute to stop a shot from Traore and a solid display overall, even if not really tested. Ready to step up should David De Gea leave in the summer. 6/10
Antonio Valencia Made captain for the night. Burst forward and unleashed a stinging right-footed shot in the 24th minute. Solid. 6
Chris Smalling Was composed alongside Blind in the centre of defence. His header set up Mkhitaryan for the second goal to put the result beyond doubt. 6
Daley Blind Didn’t do too much wrong against his former club. It remains to be seen whether he has a long-term future under Mourinho at Old Trafford. 6
Matteo Darmian Cleared his lines well. Solid if unspectacular. Another player whose future at the club appears to be unclear. 6
Ander Herrera Was barking orders to his team-mates from the kick-off. Continued his strong form with a solid display in front of the Manchester United defence. Always seems up for the fight. 7
Marouane Fellaini Provided the assist for Pogba’s opener. Was a nuisance as usual in midfield. Should have scored with a header from Pogba’s cross in the 65th minute. 6
Juan Mata Didn’t get on the ball much in the first half and failed to make much of an impact overall. Booked for a reckless lunge late on. Subbed at the death. 5
Paul Pogba Started brightly and had a shot within the first minute. Took a while to find his range with his passing but his wickedly deflected goal in the 18th minute gave the Red Devils the lead after he was left unattended by the Ajax defence. 8
Henrikh Mkhitaryan Scored Manchester United’s second goal when he flicked in Smalling’s header. Subbed in the 74th minute. Struggled to make his mark early on and generally looked subdued. Aside from the second goal, his most telling contribution came for the opener, when his run helped to free up space for Pogba. Subbed in the 74th minute. 6
Marcus Rashford Had a frustrating first half as he struggled to break away from his markers. Still, you could see his pace was a cause for concern in the Ajax back four and he linked up well with Pogba in the second half. Subbed in the 84th minute. 7
