Arsene Wenger hits back at Jose Mourinho after Arsenal claim
Arsene Wenger rejects Jose Mourinho's suggestion that the Arsenal manager put pressure on the fourth official on Sunday
Arsene Wenger has rejected Jose Mourinho’s suggestions that the Arsenal manager put pressure on the fourth official during the 2-0 win over Manchester United at The Emirates on Sunday afternoon.
The Manchester United boss made the claim at his post-match news conference at The Emirates after watching his side suffer a blow to their hopes of finishing in the top four.
Goals from Granit Xhaka and Danny Welbeck handed Arsenal all three points and kept the Gunners’ faint hopes of finishing in the top four alive.
Mourinho and Wenger exchanged a brief handshake after the game but the Portuguese coach could not help but make a point about the Frenchman’s behaviour on the touchline during the clash.
But Wenger insisted that he did not agree with Mourinho’s perspective later in the week.
“Honestly, I didn’t feel that I didn’t put pressure on the fourth official,” Wenger told a news conference on Tuesday morning.
“It’s true I went to see him once or twice during the game but it was amicable.
“I don’t think I went overboard, no. You should ask the fourth official if he had a problem.”
Arsenal take on Southampton at St Mary’s on Wednesday night as they look to keep alive their hopes of finishing in the top four this season.
