Jamie Redknapp sends message to Arsenal about Chelsea
Jamie Redknapp says Arsenal should prioritise winning the FA Cup over finishing fourth this season
Jamie Redknapp believes that Arsenal should forget about a top-four finish in the Premier League and instead focus on trying to beat Chelsea in the FA Cup final.
The north London side kept their faint hopes of securing Champions League qualification alive when they beat Manchester United 2-0 at The Emirates in the Premier League on Sunday thanks to goals from Granit Xhaka and Danny Welbeck.
Arsenal have endured a very difficult 2017 so far and have struggled to find consistent form in the Premier League.
However, Arsene Wenger’s men do have the chance to finish the season with a trophy when they take on Chelsea in the FA Cup final at Wembley on 27 May.
And former Liverpool midfielder Redknapp feels that Arsenal should focus all of their efforts on winning the FA Cup rather than trying to finish fourth.
Redknapp wrote in his Daily Mail column: “Victory over Manchester United kept Arsenal’s slim hopes of a top-four finish alive but if I was Arsene Wenger I would be making the FA Cup my top priority.
“We have been brainwashed into thinking that qualifying for the Champions League is the be all and end all.
“At the end of your career it is the trophies you look back on, not the number of times you came fourth — or second in Tottenham’s case this season.
“It has been nine years since Spurs’ last major honour, the 2008 League Cup. Even though Tottenham will finish above Arsenal for the first time in 22 years, it would hurt them to see Arsene Wenger’s side lift the FA Cup.
“Defeating Chelsea at Wembley in three weeks’ time will give Arsenal the perfect platform for next season — regardless of their league position.”
Arsenal finished second in the Premier League and without a trophy last season.
