Paul Merson is backing Arsenal to ease to a 3-1 win against Everton on Sunday but expects the Gunners to miss out on a top-four place.

The north London side were struggling in the Premier League in February and March after losses to Chelsea, Liverpool, Watford and West Bromwich Albion.

Arsenal have bounced back impressively in recent weeks after head coach Arsene Wenger switched to a 3-4-3 formation similar to champions Chelsea.

The four-time Premier League champions have beaten Manchester United, Southampton, Stoke City and Sunderland in recent weeks to put pressure on Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will be assured of a top-four finish if Liverpool beat relegated Middlesbrough at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

Writing in his Sky Sports column about Arsenal’s home clash against Everton this weekend, former Gunners midfielder Merson said:

“I expect Arsenal to win. They need to win and Everton haven’t been great away from home recently.

“Romelu Lukaku will want to score to make sure he wins the Golden Boot, but Arsenal need the three points to give them a chance for the top four.”

Arsenal will take on Premier League champions Chelsea in the FA Cup final at Wembley on Saturday 27 May.

The Gunners haven’t missed out on a Champions League spot since Wenger took over the reins in 1996.
