Paul Merson makes prediction about Man United team selection for Arsenal clash
The Arsenal legend expects Manchester United to rest players for their trip to The Emirates on Sunday afternoon
Paul Merson has backed Jose Mourinho to make wholesale changes for Manchester United’s trip to Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils will make the trip to the Emirates Stadium less than 48 hours after their Europa League semi-final on Thursday night.
Manchester United are in fifth place and a point behind Manchester City, who occupy the final Champions League qualifying spot.
Mourinho’s side face an uphill battle to secure a top-four finish with third-placed Liverpool a further four points ahead of Manchester United.
The Old Trafford outfit can qualify for the Champions League if Manchester United win the Europa League for the first time this term.
Writing in his Sky Sports column about whether Mourinho will rest players at Arsenal to prioritise the second leg of their Europa League semi-final, Merson said:
“I don’t think so. I’d be shocked if any of the big guns played at the Emirates on Sunday. The wholesale changes put severe pressure on Arsene Wenger.
“They will be playing a second string side in my opinion and if they can’t beat an under-strength Manchester United, huge pressure will be put on the Frenchman.
“He would probably prefer to be playing United’s first team.”
Manchester United finished in fifth place in the Premier League table but won the FA Cup last season under Louis van Gaal.
The Red Devils have won the EFL Cup last term.
