Arsene Wenger sends message to Arsenal fans about Alexis Sanchez
The Arsenal manager believes Alexis Sanchez's goal summed up everything that's good about the Chile international
Arsene Wenger felt that Alexis Sanchez’s goal at Southampton highlighted why the Arsenal striker is a top-class player.
The Chile international has been criticised in recent months for his poor attitude during the north London side’s difficult run of results in the Champions League and the Premier League.
Sanchez broke the deadlock in the 60th minute with a superb goal after the Arsenal star shrugged off the attentions of Southampton defenders Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens.
The 28-year-old has scored 20 goals and has made nine assists in 32 appearances in the Premier League in the 2016-17 season.
The Arsenal star has been linked with a move to Premier League leaders Chelsea at the end of the season with less than 14 months remaining on his current Gunners deal.
However, Wenger was full of praise for his star player despite uncertainty about Sanchez’s future after his impressive goal at St Mary’s.
“I think the goal that he has scored tonight showed what he is about,” Wenger told his post-match media conference.
“Very good technique in a short space, he scores important goals. And with very short technique he has invention in his head.
“He’s creative because he’s not phased by anything and he’s surprised everybody in the stadium tonight by what he did. They expected him to take a shot and he is very quick, so overall he has done extremely well.”
Olivier Giroud scored an 83rd-minute goal to secure three points for Arsenal.
