Mike Phelan states his prediction for Celta Vigo v Man United
Mike Phelan discusses the importance of Manchester United keeping their patience during the first leg of the Europa League semi-final
Mike Phelan has warned Manchester United’s players to be patient as they prepare for their crunch Europa League clash against Celta Vigo on Thursday night.
The Red Devils head into the game looking to return to winning ways after the disappointment of their 1-1 draw with Swansea City in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
That draw left Manchester United’s hopes of finishing in the top four in doubt, with Jose Mourinho’s men currently fifth in the table.
The result highlighted the importance of the Red Devils’ semi-final clash with Celta Vigo as Mourinho’s side look to win the competition and secure their spot in next season’s Champions League.
However, former Manchester United coach Phelan has talked up the importance of the Red Devils being solid during the first leg of the last four clash in Spain.
Phelan told Manchester United’s website: “Going away in Europe is a different challenge.
“You have got to get everything prepared properly, you have got to be in the right frame of mind, you have got to have the right players available for that game.
“But you have also got to be patient. It is a two-legged affair and you are away from home first, so the importance is to be in the tie for the second leg. That is the experience we gained over the years.
“Jose will be solid, he will be diligent to the fact that Celta Vigo have been one of the better teams in the competition and he will know his stuff. He’s been at the highest level, he knows what Europe is all about, knows how to conduct himself and he knows how to motivate the players for a semi-final tie.”
The Red Devils then have the small matter of a trip to Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon as they look to get their top-four bid back on track.
