Paul Merson sends message to Chelsea fans about Arsenal
Paul Merson claims that Arsenal "won" the Premier League title for Chelsea this season
Paul Merson has claimed that Arsenal “won” Chelsea the Premier League title by beating the Blues early in the season.
The Gunners claimed a 3-0 win over Antonio Conte’s men at The Emirates back in September to condemn the Blues to successive losses to top-four rivals Arsenal and Liverpool.
The defeat prompted Conte to switch to a 3-4-3 formation and the Blues did not look back as they raced to the Premier League title.
Chelsea were crowned champions on Friday night as they sealed a 1-0 win over West Brom at the Hawthorns to clinch the title with two games to spare.
And Merson believes that the game at Arsenal proved to be the turning point for Conte’s side.
Speaking on Sky Sports News HQ on Saturday, Merson said: “They got ripped to shreds by Arsenal, I remember the game.
“That was the blessing, I think Arsenal won them the league.
“I think that’s when he went back and thought ‘right I’m going to play the way I play with three at the back.’ I think it’s as simple as that.
“I think if they played four at the back they would have been where they were last season, that was hardly anywhere. It was the worst Premier League defence ever.
“They won 13 football matches on the trot, 13 in the Premier League, the hardest league in the world. They’ve blown everybody out of the way.”
Chelsea can still win a domestic double this season and will take on Arsenal in the FA Cup final at Wembley at the end of the month.
